The Qinling Mountains, a major east-west mountain range in China, are home to hundreds of vertebrates and thousands of seed plant species, some of which are found nowhere else on the earth. The region is famous for “four precious species in the Qinling Mountains”, namely crested ibis, Qinling panda, Qinling golden snub-nosed monkey, and Shaanxi takin - all are under first-class protection in China. Takin is a majestic species of herbivore distributing in the areas near the eastern Himalayas. They usually live in a herd with a stable amount of members. In the summer, herds of takins gather high on the mountain slopes. In the Tangjiahe area of the Giant Panda National Park, there are around 1,300 takins currently.
China made its first major revision in 32 years of its list of endangered wild animals in 2021 as a further step toward wildlife conservation and increasing biodiversity. Based on changes in wildlife resources and the latest research results, China added another 517 species and classes of animals to the list of state-protected wildlife. In China, wildlife protection has been continuously strengthened throughout the last two decades. At the end of the last century, the population of wild Asian elephants was over 100. At the end of 2019, the number has increased to around 300.At the Wild Elephant Valley in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, there is the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center to improve the welfare of the species.
